Rescuers retrieve the bodies of two workers and one engineer who died after falling into a waste treatment pond at a leather company in Ho Chi Minh City on April 24

Agencies in Ho Chi Minh City are investigating the case in which three people died after falling into a leather company's waste treatment pond on Wednesday.

Initial information was that employees of the Hao Duong Leather Company in Nha Be District, were seen sinking into the pond by other workers who had responded to their cries for help, Tuoi Tre reported.

Fearing that the pond, full of chemical substances, was too dangerous to enter in order to rescue the victims, the witnesses informed local agencies.

The agencies drained the chemicals from the pond, reported to be 200 square meters and five meters deep, before retrieving the victims: workers Ha Thanh Tai, 24, Le Phat Tai, 28, and engineer Nguyen Minh Tuan, 29.

Tuan and Thanh Tai were reportedly working near the pond when they fell in. Phat Tai, who was working nearby, then jumped in to rescue them.

Police said autopsies are being conducted to determine the victims' causes of death.
