A military officer crashed his car into two motorbikes on a bridge in the central city of Da Nang on Monday, killing three adults and seriously injuring two children.
The crash occurred at around 5:30 p.m. when the seven-seater driven by Dinh The Hiep, 38, hit the bikes on Thuan Phuoc Bridge.
Lieutenant-colonel Hiep is an officer of the navy's 3rd Regional Command stationed in Da Nang’s Son Tra District.
Dinh Cong Trang, 57, who was driving a motorbike and his wife Trinh Thi Thai, 54, died on the spot.
Le Thi Van Khanh, 34, who was driving another motorbike with her two children aged 6 and 8 on the back seats, was also killed.
Thai, Khanh and her 8-year-old son were thrown off their vehicles and fell from the height of around 30 meters down to a road below.
Both women died on the spot while the boy was seriously injured and rushed into a hospital together with his 6-year-old sister.
The car and the bikes were badly damaged after the crash.
The police of Hai Chau District said Hiep, the car driver, had blood-alcohol content higher than allowed at the time of the incident.
Hiep had been handed over to military authorities for investigations.
