Three children, including two siblings, drowned in a small pond in the southern province of Dong Nai on Thursday, local authorities said.
At around 1:30 p.m. the brothers, 10 and 13, and another 9-year-old boy in Bien Hoa City’s Ho Nai Ward went out together.
Three hours later, Pham Thi Hoan, the mother of the siblings, started to look for them. She saw the clothes and shoes of the boys near the man-made pond, which was small but around two meters deep. The pond is 100 meters away from her house.
Hoan called help but it was too late.
Nearby residents said they dug the 15-square-meter pond to store water for farming. The pond is not enclosed.
Local authorities said they will order locals to put up fences around similar ponds or to cover them following the incident.
