Police in Khanh Hoa Province have arrested three members of a major gang that has for long been notorious for procuring sex workers in the province’s capital town of Nha Trang.
Dinh Huu Lai, 43, faces charges of “procuring prostitutes”, and Nguyen Ngoc Man and his wife Truong Cam Thu, of “harboring prostitutes”.
The crimes respectively carry jail terms of up to 10 years and 15 years under the Penal Code.
The three were arrested on July 22 after police raided Man’s hotel on Nguyen Thi Minh Khai Street and caught three sex workers red-handed. Their confession led to the arrest of Lai and the couple.
At the police station, Lai said he recruited women aged around 20 and paid their rents.
He would then link up with hotel owners, cabbies, and xe om (motorbike taxi) drivers to find clients.
Lai charged each client up to US$100 and paid the sex workers half the amount.
“This gang has been operating in Nha Trang for 4 years,” news website VnExpress quoted an unnamed police officer as saying. He did not say why it took the police so long to crack down.
In 2001 Lai was charged with procuring prostitutes and got a suspended jail term.
