Prosecutors in Vietnam have filed charges against 28 people for their involvement in a massive online gambling ring that managed to accumulate US$13 million of bet money.
Pham Huy Toan, 38, from Ho Chi Minh City, has been charged with organizing gambling activities while the others will stand trial for gambling charges.
According to prosecutors, Toan had 58 different bank accounts which he used to receive more than VND301 billion ($13.3 million) of bet money from local players. He would then send the money to a gambling website based in the UK.
As a middleman, he was paid nearly VND727 million from March 2013 to July 2014, prosecutors said.
The local players include government officials, doctors and students from across the country.
A court date has not been set yet.
