A court in Binh Phuoc Province in southern Vietnam on Wednesday sentenced a man to four years in jail and 27 others to between ten and 28 months imprisonment for damaging a police station.

Nguyen Van Vy, 26, and the others were protesting at the Bu Dop District Police station, where his relative Huynh Thanh Thang, 25, died in custody.

Investigations were promised but no official cause of the death has been announced.

The indictment said Vy had driven a car carrying Thang's body to the police office on October 8 last year.

Around 100 people, including irritated members of the public, had helped pull down the office's gate for the body to be carried in.

It was late in the night when the crowd dispersed.

Vy and 27 other people were charged with causing public order. Vy was also charged with opposing officials on duty.

Thang was arrested in September on suspicion that he was involved in a theft. He died on October 7 in police custody.
