Police on Wednesday arrested two people smuggling 26 kilograms of gold from China to Hanoi.
Tran Van Hai and Nguyen Thi Thu Thuy were arrested on a train from Lao Cai Province bordering China with three bars of gold and 45 smaller pieces, worth around VND28.5 billion (US$1.37 million), according to current prices.
The gold was attached to their waistcoats.
Police are investigating further.
Nguyen Anh Tuan, head of the Economic Crime Department of Hanoi Police, said the police will consider suggesting criminal charges.
The department since early this year has enhanced forces to investigate gold smuggling and trading in the area after the government issued a decree calling for efforts to stabilize gold prices.
"Due to the gap between domestic and global gold prices, more people having been smuggling gold into the country recently," Tuan said.
Gold on the domestic market is selling for nearly VND3 million ($142) per ounce more than the global market.
