The military command in Vietnam southern coastal province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau Tuesday slapped a penalty of VND3.5 million (US$168) each on 25 people who tried to be smuggled by boat to Australia last month.
They were all set to leave on the night of June 24 when they were caught by the police.
Three alleged people smugglers, Nguyen Van Kinh, Pham Van Tuong, and Nguyen Ngoc Loi, were arrested for questioning.
They had reportedly been paid US$10,000-13,000 by each of the 25 people .
