A court in the northern province of Quang Ninh on Friday sentenced 22 people to between 31 months and six years in jail for their roles in an illegal ring that had smuggled more than 100 used cars into China.
Among them were two customs officers at the Bac Phong Sinh border gate, Trieu Hoai Anh and Bui Quang Anh.
The ring leader Ha Tuan Dung and three other key members are still at large, authorities said.
The court heard that the customs officers had received bribes of between VND12 million and VND17 million per week for at least five months in 2013 to let the cars pass the border. They were sentenced to 31 months each.
Dung and his accomplices, including two Chinese men, managed to smuggled 110 used cars from Hong Kong into Vietnam before sending them to mainland China.
The ring’s last batch had 25 cars worth more than VND17 billion (US$762,800).
