Police in the central province of Nghe An are investigating a case in which a 21-year-old student was seriously burned after a woman allegedly threw acid into her face out of jealousy.
Nguyen Thi Tram, 37, of Quy Hop District turned herself to police on Wednesday, saying she attacked Pham Thi Van, who is studying to be a teacher.
At around 8 p.m. on May 26, Tram came to Van’s house and asked her to come out for a talk.
As soon as Van stepped out, Tram threw a bottle full of acid into Van’s face.
The victim collapsed and screamed for help. She was rushed to hospital while Tram fled the scene.
Van was later transferred to the National Institute of Burns in critical condition.
Tram did not disclose on her motive. Local residents said she may have been jealous with Van as she suspected Van was having an affair with her husband, the director of a local mining company.
