Two workers were killed when land collapsed during the construction of a drainage system in the northern province of Lai Chau, Vietnam News Agency reported Sunday.
Le Van Luu and Lo Van Toan, both 37, were standing in a five-meter hole to adjust a pipe which was being lowered into place by a crane when land by the side of the machine collapsed and buried them.
Other workers scrambled to dig up the soil and rushed them to the Lai Chau General Hospital.
But they died later the same day due to brain trauma and broken necks.
It appears that the two were working for the Lao Cai Province-based Quyet Tien Construction Company, one of the contractors for the project to build a 13-hectare aquaculture tank.
Work on the VND50-billion (US$2.4 million) project began in January last year.
