Police in the northern Vietnamese province of Thai Binh said Tuesday that two women gamblers drowned while trying to escape after they raided a boat used for gambling.
Following a tip-off from local residents, officers boarded the vessel docked at a river in Hung Ha District at around 11 p.m. last Sunday.
Fourteen people, including eight women, tried to escape by jumping into the water in the hope of boarding other boats docked nearby.
But tragically Nguyen Thi Hang, 26, of Hanoi and Tran Thi Huyen Nga, 36, of Ha Nam Province drowned.
The police, with the help of local residents, recovered Nga's body soon afterwards. Hang's body was found the following morning.
Two others were rescued from the river.
The police seized the pot of around VND600 million (US$28,800).
