One police officer was arrested and another was prohibited from leaving his residential area in the central province of Phu Yen for their alleged involvement in the death of a robbery suspect.

Officers Nguyen Than Thao Thanh and Do Nhu Huy of the Tuy Hoa Town police division stand accused of using corporal punishment which led to the death of Ngo Thanh Kieu last May.

Earlier, inspectors from the People's Supreme Procuracy the country's highest prosecutorial office also placed three other officers under investigation for the same charges.

According to the initial police report, on May 13, police summoned Kieu, 30, for questioning about a gang robbery of two days earlier. By the time they summoned Kieu, police had already arrested two other suspects.

Later that same day, Kieu suffered from "symptoms of fatigue," so they sent him to the provincial police health clinic, police claimed at that time.

The man was later transferred to Phu Yen General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Autopsy results showed that Kieu had bruises from his waist to the soles of his feet, and three blood clots in his brain, according to the report.

The case is being investigated further.
