An Indonesian signs a document admitting his boat illegally entered Vietnamese waters
Coast Guard in the central province of Quang Ngai said they apprehended two foreign cargo boats anchored illegally in Vietnamese waters Monday.
But the authorities have yet to identify the nationality of the boats, saying merely they were on their way from China to Indonesia with 12 Indonesians and six Chinese crew members.
Bui Phu Phu, deputy chief of the province Coast Guard, told news website VnExpress that the vessels were out of food and had anchored two nautical miles (3.6 kilometers) off a local port to send some of the crew to shore for buying supplies.
But the captains failed to inform local authorities or fly the Vietnamese flag to show respect, he said.
Authorities are holding the sailors' passports pending investigation.
