Agencies in the central province of Nghe An Tuesday began tests on two old cannons that local people recovered from a river two days earlier, VnExpress reported.
The news website quoted Nguyen Van Binh, who owns the cannons, as saying that one of them was nearly 3.5 meters long and weighed around two tons.
Most of its parts were still intact, including its barrel, Binh said, adding that both of its ends had Chinese characters engraved on them.
The other was smaller with the weight of over 500 kilograms and looked newer, said the scrap trader.
According to Binh, on Sunday local fishermen informed him that they found a "strange" object ,which ended up being the bigger cannon, stuck in their nets, so he sent people there to recover it.
He later was informed that several fishermen had also recovered another smaller cannon from the river and sold it to a different scrap dealer, so Binh bought it from the trader, VnExpress said.
