Police in Hanoi have arrested two men for illegally possessing and trading weapons including guns and ammunition, a local official said on Monday.

Nguyen Hoang Hai, 35, and Ngo Van Phong, 41, were apprehended after police found a shotgun and five bullets in Hai's handbag, said Major Le Khac Son, chief of a task force placed in charge of tackling social security crimes for Hanoi's police department.

The duo were riding pillion on a motorbike with another man as the driver when police stopped them at random around 1 a.m. Sunday, but the latter fled, leaving his companions behind, he said.

Hai told police that he bought the gun and the bullets from Phong's acquaintance, referred to as Binh, in the northern province of Hoa Binh last year after being introduced by Phong.

A search of Phong's house later produced a homemade double-barreled gun, 24 shells, three Japanese swords and 0.5 kilograms of lead authorities believe was used to make shotgun bullets, according to Son.

Police are investigating.
