Two 12-year-old girls drowned in a river in the central Vietnamese province of Nghe An Sunday, online newspaper VnExpress reported.

At around 2 pm eight girl students of Van Yen Secondary School in Do Luong District went to the Dao River to bathe to cool off since the weather was hot, local authorities said.

When they were bathing, Nguyen Thi Thuy Linh fell into a whirlpool.

On seeing Linh struggling in the water, Nguyen Thi Trang tried to save her, but tragically both were swept away.

The others swam ashore and rushed to seek help from local residents, but Linh and Trang had drowned by the time help arrived.

According to Nghe An authorities, more than 10 children have drowned in rivers and lakes across the province in just the last month.
