Border guards in the north central province of Quang Binh arrested two Laotian nationals for allegedly attempting to smuggle three kilograms of methamphetamine from Laos into Vietnam last Friday.
Xom Sa N. and Vi Lay S. of Khammouane Province were caught near Cha Lo Border Gate in Quang Binh while they were carrying the drugs on a Laos-registered car for sale in Vietnam.
The three kilograms of methamphetamine may fetch VND5 billion (US$237,600), authorities said.
The border guards said they had been watching the Laotians for more than 20 days in an operation joined by narcotics police of Khammouane Province.
They said it was the largest batch of drugs smuggled via border in Quang Binh.
The case is being investigated further.
On June 18, border guards in Quang Tri Province also arrested three Laotians carrying 10 brick-shaped packs of heroin weighing 3.5 kilograms in a Laos-registered car.
The trio said they bought the heroin in Vientiane, the capital city of Laos, and transported the drugs by car to Vietnam's Lao Bao Border Gate and planned to sell the drugs to Vietnamese dealers.
