The Ho Chi Minh City People’s Court Tuesday sentenced two people to death and 12 others to terms ranging from life to nine years for trading more than 100kg of heroin in 2013.
Tran Tuan An, 29, and Le Nguyen Hoang Anh, 30, got death for “illegal trading of narcotics.”
The mastermind Cao Tri Trung and five others got life and six others were sentenced to nine to 20 years.
According to the indictment, on July 14, 2013, police caught Anh on a street in HCMC’s Tan Binh District with more than 5kg of heroin.
He had bought the drug from An.
Further investigations led to the arrests of 12 others in Trung’s gang.
Trung confessed the gang had traded more than 100kg of heroin in the city between March and June 2013 after buying it for VND30 billion (US$1.35 million) in northern provinces.
The court said An and Anh were given capital punishment because they had been directly involved with the drugs seized.
