Two Asiatic black bear cubs were rescued from smugglers in the northern province of Lai Chau and handed over to the Animals Asia Foundation, VnExpress reported Thursday.
The Lai Chau police rescued the baby bears from two men who were transporting them to nearby Lao Cai Province, the news website quoted the Hong Kong-headquartered non-profit AAF as saying.
AAF later sent the cubs to the Vietnam Bear Rescue Center at the Tam Dao National Park near Hanoi.
The animals - weighing eight kilograms and 12 kg need special care since they have been separated from their mother too early, according to the organization.
Asiatic black bears (Ursus thibetanus) are categorized as "vulnerable" by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, mainly because of deforestation and poaching for body parts.
Its bile is sold as an ingredient in traditional Chinese medicine.
