The balcony of a room in the fourth floor from which three men fell while attempting to escape police
Ho Chi Minh City police raided on a gambling den on Thursday (January 10) afternoon, leaving two suspects dead and one seriously injured, after the three tried to flee.
Phan Van Nhu, 49, and Nguyen Huy Thuong, 41, both from the northern province of Hai Duong, were the two deceased men. Cat Van Thuan, 33, living in the adjacent Binh Tan District, was hospitalized with injuries to his spleen, a fractured jaw and left femur, and a ruptured heel.
Police in HCMC's Tan Binh District on 3.30 p.m. raided a room on the fourth floor of an apartment building on Quach Van Tuan Street and arrested 14 people.
Three bolted, running toward the balcony at the back of the apartment, and climbing onto the handrail to flee. But the handrail broke, causing them to fall to the ground.
The fall killed Nhu on the spot. The two others were then rushed to the hospital, but Thuong died on the way.
Locals told Thanh Nien they heard a warning shot when the team of officers burst into the gambling den.
Nguyen Quoc Buu, 68, a parking attendant at the building, said: "At that time, I was lying around watching TV when I heard "˜thud, thud, thud.' I thought flowerpots of someone upstairs might have dropped.
"I saw three people lying there; one of them was still, one was writhing, another opening his mouth and gasping.
"Frightened, I screamed in order that everyone would rush to help them to the hospital but only two could be brought because one had died," Buu said.

A source, who requested anonymity, told Tuoi Tre that Nguyen Van Tinh, 49, the room's owner, had won the lottery of VND30 million (US$1,440) so he held a party to celebrate with his friends.
After drinking, they began gambling. Only some played, while the others just watched, the source said.
Police took the other 11 to police headquarters around 9 p.m. for questioning.
Tinh, Cat Thanh Hai, 34, Dinh Quoc Thanh, 43, Ha The Tac, 30, Vuong Dinh Hai, 33, on January 11 were detained for further investigation into their gambling, according to a Tuoi Tre report.
