Two police officers in Ben Tre Province have been suspended for wrongly issuing permanent residence registrations to 31 overseas Vietnamese to help them evade tax.
Nguyen Quang Vinh, acting police chief of Giao Long Commune in Chau Thanh District, and his subordinate Tran Minh Nhut both confessed to taking bribes for their act.
Lao Dong newspaper quoted an unnamed source from the commune Party unit as saying that none of the 31 people actually stay in these houses where they registered.
The registration enabled them to import cars and other products without paying relevant taxes.
Vinh turned in the VND45 million (US$2,160) bribes he claimed were paid to him while Nhut handed over VND17 million.
The police are investigating.
