Police in the Mekong Delta province of Long An on Monday arrested the drivers of two buses involved in two fatal crashes on a highway last month.
Huynh Thanh Anh, 39, and Le Hoang Son, 46, are being investigated on charge of “violating traffic rules.”
At around 4 a.m. on September 28, Anh was driving a 50-seater bus on Ho Chi Minh City-Trung Luong Highway’s section through Long An’s Thu Thua District with 40 passengers onboard, heading for HCMC, when he hit the back of a truck parked on the emergency lane.
The bus plunged into the street barrier and fell into a paddy field.
Nguyen Hoang Vu, 47, an assistant driver on the bus, died on the spot.
Around 15 minutes later, another 50-seater bus driven by Son traveling past the first crash scene hit a seven-seater car and a taxi from behind.
The sedan then hit the truck, which was still on the road after the first crash.
Nguyen Thi Sen, a 59-year-old passenger on the seven-seater car, succumbed to severe injuries.
Four other people in the car were seriously injured.
Police said the two buses involved in the crashes had been speeding, and the first bus encroached on the emergency lane when it hit the truck.
