Two schoolboys allegedly drowned in a water-filled pit at a construction site in Hanoi Monday, Nguoi Lao Dong (Laborer) newspaper reported.
Tran Van Hao, 10, and Chu Hai Dang, 9, both students of Van Noi Primary School in Dong Anh District, were found dead in the 100-square-meter pit near National Highway 23 at around 5 a.m. Tuesday.
Residents found the boys' bodies floating and informed local authorities.
The boys' shoes were found around 50 meters away from the pit, part of a road project that extends from the Nhat Tan Bridge to Noi Bai International Airport.
According to local residents, the pit was filled with up to two meters of water as a result of heavy rains on Sunday and Monday, but it had not been fenced off and no warning signs had been posted.
The boys went fishing Monday morning, but did not return home, their families said.
The families searched unsuccessfully for the boys all night long.
Local police are investigating.
