The Hanoi Police said Thursday they have arrested two men for possessing a leopard carcass they had reportedly smuggled in from Laos after painting it to make it look like a tiger skin.

Luong Minh Sang, 53, and Dinh Trong Linh, 53, were taken in after officers found the frozen 80-kilogram carcass in a car driven by Linh in Chuong My District.

Sang told them he had bought the carcass in Laos for VND115 million (US$5,461) to cook its bones and make a paste for use as a cure for a family member who has arthritis.

The police are investigating.

Leopards are protected in Vietnam.
