An 18-year-old youth was killed and his parents injured Saturday after an oil tanker they were doing welding work on exploded off the Vietnamese coast of Quang Ninh Province.

The accident killed Nguyen Van Phong, one of the workers welding gas pipes of the electric generator on the tanker.

His father Nguyen Van Phuong, 41, suffered burns on his back, and his mother Chu Thi Huong, 40, sustained head injuries.

Phuong's boat was damaged in the explosion and sank, as did a quarter of the tank, the VTCNews said.

The family was hired by the local Bach Dang Export and Import Company to fix its boat.

Debris from the tanker explosion hit another boat anchored 70 meters away, injuring 17-year-old Nguyen Van Tai.

It is suspected that eveporating oil caught the welding sparks had set off the fire and explosion. The tanker was not carrying oil at the time.

Authorities have towed the tanker ashore and salvaged Phuong's boat. They are investigating the accident.
