Ho Chi Minh City police Sunday said they have arrested an 18-year-old woman for allegedly killing an 18-month-old boy she had been babysitting after being unable to stop him from crying.
Ho Ngoc Nho is accused of killing Do Nhat Long in her rented room in Thu Duc District Saturday. She had been hired by Vo Thi Huyen, 24, to take care of the child since she and her husband both worked.
Nho confessed to the police that after Huyen dropped Long off at her place as usual, she fed him breakfast but he refused to eat and kept crying.
She lifted him up by his limbs and threatened him, and dropped him on the floor, but he cried even louder.
She then trod on his chest and stomach and again to no avail.
She then locked the child up in a bathroom, and when she opened it 20 minutes later, she found him lying still.
She asked neighbors to help her take him to hospital, but doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.
The police said the boy had died of multiple injuries on his neck, lungs, heart, liver, and other organs.
Online newspaper VnExpress quoted Long's father, Do Duc Trong, 27, as saying they had hired Nho instead of putting him in a nursery because she could take care of him him until late at night.
They had trusted her because she was a neighbor and also a mother, he said.
Nho has a two-year-old child.
Trong said sometimes he saw bruises on his son's face but Nho would always claim he had fallen while playing.
Some neighbors told the newspaper that Nho often beat her own child.
The police are investigating.
