A 14-year-old boy died tragically trying to save a classmate who could not swim but jumped into a lake nevertheless to cool off in Binh Dinh Province last week.
Nguyen Thanh Nhang died along with Tran Quoc Cuong on Friday (February 19), and their bodies were found following a search by their families during the weekend.
Investigators in the central province said another friend of theirs, Ngo Quoc Phi, also nearly drowned trying to help the two.
The police have since said that one or two others also nearly drowned trying to help their friends.
The group of five boys gathered at the Suoi Cau lake in their neighborhood for fun and bathing around noon Friday.
Cuong was the first to get into the lake and began to drown minutes later.
Nhang, who had been sitting on the bank, leapt in to save his friend. Phi also joined in the rescue effort while the other two ran for help.

When the children’s families reached the scene, Nhang and Cuong had disappeared and Phi was nearly exhausted.
Nhang, the sixth child in a family of seven, was an excellent student at high school, his teachers and friends said.
His father told Thanh Nien that his son was a smart boy who always helped the family, working both at home and in the field after school.
A classmate, Pham Bao Van, said he was a role model who had died a hero.
“We are distraught losing two friends in a single day.”
