Customs officers at the Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City on Wednesday seized 137 kilograms of elephant tusks from the luggage of two Vietnamese passengers who had flow in from Thailand.

The officers said that around 8.30 a.m., they found 30 cut elephant tusks in four  pieces of luggage that V.V.T. and N.V.T. carried on a Thai Airways flight.

They found 30 cut pieces of elephant tusks in the four packages.

The tusks weighed a combined 137 kilograms, and estimated to be worth more than US$217,000.

The two men could not produce any import documentation for the tusks.

They told customs officers they had received the tusks in Thailand to be delivered to a man in HCMC

The tusks were previously sent from Angola to Kenya and brought to Thailand, they said.

The men are being detained for further investigations.

Vietnam officially banned ivory trade in 1992.
