A 12-year-old girl drowned in a water-filled construction site pit in Ho Chi Minh City on Wednesday, the Nguoi Lao Dong newspaper reported.

The accident happened at around 1 p.m. at the Phu Xuan residential area in Nha Be District when a group of five girls were playing near the abandoned construction site pit.

Do Thi Thu Thao, a seventh grader of Nguyen Binh Khiem Secondary School, took a false step and fell into the pit.

The four girls ran to a nearby house to call for help, but it took about 15 minutes for a local resident to jump into the pit, and Thao was dead by then.

The flooded pit is more than two meters deep, with grass growing luxuriantly around it. According to nearby residents, the pit was part of a housing project that has been abandoned for more than a year.

There was no fencing or warning signs placed around the pit.
