The Ho Chi Minh City police said Tuesday they arrested 124 people after busting a cockfighting den two days earlier.

One hundred officers from Binh Chanh District arrived at an unused piece of land where a crowd had gathered to watch and bet on cock fights at around 1:30 p.m. Sunday.

Some tried to flee, but all the roads had been cordoned off by the police.

The officers seized eight cocks, 60 motorbikes and VND100 million (US$4,750).

Seven people are being detained for "organizing gambling" and 117 for gambling.

Cao Hoang Quan, 23, the alleged kingpin, told the police his den attracted around 100 gamblers a day.

Most of the detainees have criminal records, the police said, including Hoang Van Muon, 26, who is wanted by the Binh Chanh police for robbery.

Gambling is illegal in Vietnam.
