Road accidents claimed 119 lives during the long National Day weekend, the traffic police said.
Most of the accidents -- 134 of them -- happened because people were driving on the wrong side of the road, not wearing helmets, or were under the influence of alcohol, news website VnExpress Wednesday quoted the police as saying.
Viet Duc, a major hospital in Hanoi, said it was overloaded with accident victims.
It received around 245 accident victims, twice the normal number.
Most of the victims were young, aged between 16 and 30, doctors said.
The police also seized 600 motorbikes and 150 cars for flouting rules, collecting fines of more than VND14 billion (US$673,200).
