As many as 114 people were killed and 145 others were injured in 186 traffic accidents across the country during the four-day National Day holiday, according to the National Committee for Traffic Safety.
The committee said that 184 of the 186 accidents occurred on roads, killing 111 and inuring 142 between August 30 and September 2.
The two remaining accidents occurred on the railways, claiming three lives and leaving three injured.
On the National Day (September 2) alone, 48 people were killed and 75 were injured in 63 traffic accidents.
Traffic police around the country caught more than 28,000 traffic violators and levied fines worth more than VND14 billion (US$661,157) during the four-day holiday.
The most tragic road accident occurred on September 2 when a bus carrying 53 passengers plunged into an abyss in the northwestern province of Lao Cai, killing 12 people and injuring 41 others.
