The Ministry of Public Security has arrested 10 people belonging to a gang that allegedly organized illegal football betting involving thousands of gamblers.
They include Luong Quoc Khanh, 24, the alleged mastermind, and nine others from Hai Phong, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
They colluded with some people abroad to organize online betting on foreign websites.
In Vietnam, gambling is illegal.
But thousands gambled hundreds of billions of dong on football games, mostly the ongoing 2016 UEFA Champions League.
The gang would provide bank accounts for gamblers to transfer money in exchange for virtual money to bet on the games.
They also paid winners through those accounts.
The police seized 51 ATM cards, nine cell phones and many documents during raids of the suspects’ houses.
They are investigating if more people were part of the gang.
