A boy drowned after falling into a sewer during a heavy downpour on Saturday afternoon while another is still missing for the same reason in the southern province of Binh Duong near Ho Chi Minh City .
Rescuers are still searching for La Van Ty, 9, who allegedly swept away by waters into a sewer on 22-12 Street in Binh Duong's Thuan An Town.
At around 5 p.m. on Saturday when the rain was pouring down and submerging the street by around half a meter, Ty reportedly went out to bathe in the rain.
Ty allegedly fell into an uncovered sewer and was swept away by flooded waters.
Doan Thach Lap, 39, who spotted Ty when he fell into the sewer, said he had tried to save the boy but to no avail as thing happened so quickly and the waters were swift-flowing.
Lap was driving a motorbike across the street when he witnessed the scene.
He then informed local police of the accident. More than 20 officers and frogmen were sent to the site to search for the boy.
Rescuers spent the whole night searching for Ty in the sewer but he had yet to be found.
Binh Duong police halted the search at the 22-12 Street on Sunday morning, saying they will expand the search in other sewers in other streets.
Residents living on the 22-12 Street said the concrete covers of some sewers on the street were removed by strong waters in the heavy rain on Saturday.
The sewer system on the street is still being built under a project developed by the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.
Also on Saturday afternoon, local police recovered the body of Le Van Manh, a seven-year-old boy who fell into an uncovered sewer and swept away by waters on a street in Tan Uyen Town.
Manh reportedly bathed in the heavy rain at around 5 p.m. when the accident happened.
