Vietnam software contest winners named

Vietnamese Intellect 2006, an annual software contest for youth talents, wrapped up Monday in Hanoi with the winners taking home prizes of over VND300 million (US$18,650).

Twenty-three-year-old Vuong Ba Quy won the top prize of VND70 million ($4,350) and a laptop for a software that creates and recognizes mathematics expressions.

Quy, a graduate of Singapore’s Nanyang University, recently got a doctoral scholarship from the Vietnam Education Fund.

The two runners-up each got VND40 million ($4,970) and a laptop. One of them wrote a program for mobile phones for charging batteries and saving data and the other for recording vehicle toll payments and photo scanning.

The next two got VND25 million ($3,109) and a computer.

The winners were selected from among 12 entries which made it to the final from 106.

It was organized by Lao Dong Newspaper, Vietnamese Television, and the Corporation of Financing and Promoting Technology (FPT).
