Vietnam’s red-crowned cranes number nearly 400
The red-crowned crane (Grus japonensis) now numbers 371 in Vietnam, reported the International Crane Foundation.

On Mar. 7 -10, scientists led by Jeb Barzen, Director of the  International Crane Foundation surveyed the population of the bird species at nature reserves in the Mekong Delta provinces of Dong Thap, Long An and Kien Giang.

According to Mr. Barzen, most of red-crowned cranes are now nesting in Tram Chim Tam Nong Nature Reserve and the wilderness of Hon Chong, Phu My and Hon Dat in Kien Giang.

He also announced that International Crane Foundation and   The Global Conservation Organization would co-operate to restore the ecosystem in Tram Chim Nature Reserve in order to attract more red-crowned cranes to nest there.

Tram Chim is located in southern Vietnam along the Mekong River Delta comprising a 9,000ha portion of the approximately 1,000,000ha freshwater floodplain marsh known as the Plain of Reeds.

Due to the high temperatures and six-month rainy season characteristic of the area, the Plain of Reeds provides ideal habitat for thousands of species of flora and fauna.
