Spontaneous combustion of girl’s hair leaves doctors wondering
Fellow students cried out in horror as smoke arose from the hair of a 15-year-old student in northern Vietnam two days ago, an apparent victim of spontaneous combustion.

Doctors were left scratching their heads after B.H.V, a ninth grader from Nam Dinh province now in Hanoi for treatment said she was feeling normal during class on noon Monday, when her teacher suddenly cried out in fright that her hair was on fire.

Looking up she saw a circle of smoke 2 meters in radius above her head.

It happed in only 10 seconds, she recalled, adding her hair had been singed and produced a burnt smell.

Strangely, she felt normal and not the least bit hot during the entire incident. Doctors declared her five senses were also normal.

Her family said she has been a healthy child and never experienced anything of the like before.

Then on the same day at 5-6pm while at home, smoke also billowed out from her hair. This time too she felt nothing.

But at 9pm, she felt as if her “head was on fire”. She cried out in pain and was taken to a local hospital.

The next day she felt less painful but still had a “burning sensation” in her head.

Then at 10am, she underwent the mysterious phenomenon again and was taken to the Hanoi-based Central Pediatric Hospital.

Director Nguyen Thanh Liem said the central hospital had never seen anything like it.

The hospital told her not to wear woolen materials as it suspected her hair ignited due to friction caused by combustible materials rubbing together.
