Geneva Accords a great historic event for Vietnamese diplomats
The opening session of the Geneva Conference
A national seminar on the 1954 Geneva Accords hosted by the Foreign Ministry highlighted the outcome and significance of the Accords to national liberation and the contributions made by Vietnamese diplomats.

The seminar "50th Anniversary of the Signing of the Geneva Accords on Indochina: Significance and Lessons," held July 16 in Hanoi, was one of the activities celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Dien Bien Phu victory and the signing of the Accords.

The Geneva Accords were the result of the three-month long international Geneva Conference, which began in April 1954, to restore peace in Indochina.

On July 20 1954, the Conference produced a declaration which supported the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Indochina, its independence, and the cessation of hostilities and foreign involvement (or troops) in its internal affairs.

Fifteen reports and speeches at the seminar focused on analyzing and clarifying such issues as the international situation at the time the Geneva Conference was convened; the impact of the historic Dien Bien Phu victory on the negotiating table at Geneva; the impact of the Geneva Conference on the Vietnamese revolution; lessons of diplomatic struggle drawn from the Geneva Conference and adopted in the anti-American resistance war for national reunification, especially at the Paris Peace Talks designed to end the war and restore peace in Vietnam.

Concluding the seminar, Foreign Minister Nguyen Dy Nien highlighted the Accords' influence on the national liberation and peace movement in the world.

He stressed it was a great victory for the Vietnamese diplomatic service to sign the Geneva Accords, helping to enhance Vietnam's role and popularity in the international arena.
