Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung on Wednesday sent a consolatory message to Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao following a powerful earthquake that pulverized a remote area in China.

Foreign Minister Pham Gia Khiem also sent similar consolations to Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi, according to a report on the Vietnamese government website.

The death toll from the earthquake in China's remote and mountainous Yushu County, Qinghai Province, has risen to 617, Xinhua news agency said on Thursday.

Convoys with food, tents and medicine are rumbling into Yushu, where most buildings were ruined by the 6.9 magnitude quake early Wednesday morning.
