Vietnamese legislators Thursday passed a bill that will replace the firing squad with lethal injection as the capital punishment method.

Under the law on carrying out sentences for criminal offenses that will take effect July 1 next year, judges are authorized to decide whether the executed person's family will be allowed to receive his or her body, based on assessment of public security and other factors.

Currently all death sentences in Vietnam, mostly handed out for drug trafficking and murder offenses, are carried out by a firing squad, and criminals are buried in a separate graveyard.
