Vietnamese police have released a well-known blogger they arrested last year.
Nguyen Quang Lap, 59, was taken into custody on December 6. Ho Chi Minh City police later announced that he was being probed for spreading propaganda against the state, local media reported.
According to Tuoi Tre, police said he had "confessed honestly", so they have allowed him to go home while the investigation continues.
He arrived home and was in good health, his younger brother Nguyen Quang Vinh told Thanh Nien on Tuesday.
“We don’t want to talk further because we want to give him time to rest,” Vinh said, adding that he was about to board a plane from Hanoi to visit Lap in Ho Chi Minh City.
Lap took a taxi to his apartment in HCMC’s District 2 after being released on Tuesday morning, pending investigation, Mot The Gioi reported.
Many friends visited and taking photos with Lap, who said he was treated well during his detention, the news website reported.
An engineer by training, Lap has made a career out of writing. He was the scriptwriter of many Vietnamese movies that won both international and local prizes.
The crime of anti-state propaganda is punishable by a jail term of between 3 and 12 years.
