Vietnam on Thursday protested Chinese naval boats' firing of warning shots against Vietnamese fishermen who were fishing in Vietnam's waters.

A Vietnamese boats was fishing in the waters of the Truong Sa (Spratly) Archipelago on Tuesday when three Chinese naval boats disturbed it and fired a few warning shots, according to a report by the fishermen to the coast guard command.

According to the Vietnamese foreign ministry, the act has critically violated Vietnam's sovereignty and failed to comply with the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC), signed between ASEAN and China in 2002.

Vietnam demanded China immediately cease actions that violated its sovereignty and hindered Vietnamese fishing boats and fishermen operating in the waters of Vietnam's Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelago.
