China's building of a filling station and schools on an island in Vietnam’s Hoang Sa (Paracel) Archipelago violated Vietnam's sovereignty, the foreign ministry said Thursday.
The construction on Phu Lam (Woody) Island is illegal and void, Le Hai Binh, spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said.
“Vietnam has full and indisputable evidence to prove its sovereignty over Hoang Sa Archipelago in the East Sea,” he said, using the Vietnamese name of the South China Sea.
Chinese state oil giant Sinopec said on its microblog on Monday it is building a filling station and accompanying storage tank on the Phu Lam Island. Construction will take a year to complete.
The same day, Xinhua news agency reported that a primary school, a kindergarten and a vocational education center opened on the Phu Lam Island.
