More than 1,000 soldiers participated in a counter-terrorism exercise on Hanoi's Red River, Wednesday.

The exercise was coordinated by the Hanoi's People's Committee in cooperation with the Ministry of Public Security and the Ministry of National Defense.

The exercise was based on a scenario in which a group of terrorists attack a tourist ship and demand US$1 million in ransom and a helicopter.

Nguyen Van Huong, the Minister of Public Security, told VnExpress that terrorists have recently struck all across the world, posing a significant threat to national security.

Over the past ten months, he added, more than 500 cases have been recorded globally.
