US Secretary of Defense visits Vietnam

US Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter arrived in Vietnam on Sunday for an official visit at the invitation of Vietnamese defense minister Phung Quang Thanh, the Vietnam News Agency reported.
Carter made a visit to Vietnam Naval High Command and High Command of Region 1 under the Vietnam Coast Guard in the northern city of Hai Phong on May 31.
The US defense delegation later had a meeting with Vietnam’s Deputy Defense Minister Admiral Nguyen Van Hien. The two sides said the bilateral defense cooperation has been based on respect for Vietnam ’s independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.
While receiving US guests, Major General Nguyen Quang Dam, Vietnam Coast Guard’s commander affirmed Vietnam Coast Guard’s willingness to maintain maritime safety and security enhancement in accordance with international law.
Vietnam’s Defense Minister Phung Quang Thanh will hold talks with his US counterpart Ashton Carter on Monday (June 1) and will sign a "vision statement" to guide the expansion of bilateral military ties.
The US Defense Secretary is also due to meet Party Chief Nguyen Phu Trong and Vietnamese State President Truong Tan Sang.
