The US will continue to be Vietnam's friend as the two countries aim at building a strategic partnership, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Wednesday.
News website VietNamNet cited Clinton as saying Vietnam and the US have enhanced cooperation in various fields as friends, especially since her two visits to Vietnam in the last few years.
During her visit she was able to witness the dynamic and optimistic spirit of Vietnamese people, the secretary said in a statement greeting Vietnam on the country's National Day, observed on September 2.
The statement said that the relationship between Vietnam and the US was built on mutual respect and commitment to stability and prosperity in the Asia-Pacific region.
It said the US will remain Vietnam's friend and partner as the two countries create a new future for cooperation in the region and in the world.
Vietnam and the US are working together on many important issues, including HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment, environmental protection, commerce and security, Clinton said.
