Several US navy ships will arrive in Vietnam this week to help with health and civil engineering cooperative projects with Vietnam People's Navy, according to the US Embassy in Vietnam.
The actions are to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the two countries' diplomatic relationships, the embassy said.
The aircraft carrier USS George Washington was the first to arrive and appeared off the coast of the central city of Da Nang Sunday. It welcomed a delegation of Vietnamese officials that day.
During the visit, local officials met the crew and were told about the operation of the nuclear-powered carrier, now home-ported in Japan's Yokosuka.
USS George Washington's destroyers, USS Chung-Hoon and USS McCampbell, together with USS John S. McCain (DDG 56), part of the US Seventh Fleet are also set to come.
