184-Hai Phong and 185-Khanh Hoa officially became the Vietnamese Navy’s newest addition to the submarine force following a commissioning ceremony today at Cam Ranh Naval Base, Khanh Hoa Province.
This marked a “major step of modernizing the Navy, and the People’s Army of Vietnam in general," said Rear Admiral Pham Hoai Nam, Navy Commander.
The Russian-made Kilo-class submarines will join the Submarine Brigade 189. The first two submarines of the brigade, 182-Hanoi and 183-Ho Chi Minh, was commissioned in April 2014.
Vietnam and Russia signed in 2009 a US$2-billion deal to build six Kilo-class submarine.
Russia will deliver all of them by 2016, train Vietnamese crews, and supply necessary spare parts.
