Senior US senator from Arizona John McCain is in Vietnam on a visit to boost bilateral ties between the US and Vietnam, US embassy officials said.

A source from the US Embassy in Hanoi said McCain is accompanied by three other senators, Joseph Lieberman, Sheldon Whitehouse and Kelly Ayotte.

The visiting delegation met with local media Thursday.

McCain, the 2008 Republican presidential nominee and now a high-ranking officer in the US Armed Services Committee, has visited Vietnam several times and is said to have been actively involved in the normalization of relations between the two countries in 1995, 20 years after the Vietnam War.

A former war pilot, he was imprisoned for five and a half years after his plane was shot down over Hanoi in 1967.

His latest Vietnam visit was in December 2009.
